The strategy report from the Trump administration’s Make America Health Again Commission was released yesterday, setting the stage for dozens of initiatives aimed at improving the health of American children.
NUTRITION IS A KEY FOCUS. The plan is to improve both the quality of food delivered to American tables and the eating choices of consumers.
Federal food guidelines that institutions such as hospitals and schools use for meal planning, as do many consumers, are being revised.
“These guidelines will prioritize whole, healthy, and nutritious foods such as whole fat, dairy, fruits, vegetables, and meats, and suggest limiting highly processed foods and those high in sugar,” Brooke Rollins, Secretary of the Department of Agriculture, said.
The Food and Drug Administration will continue limiting or prohibiting petroleum-based food dyes, especially in food delivered to schools.
Food producers have agreed to this initiative, according to Rollins, including Tyson Foods, PepsiCo, Smucker’s, General Mills, and Nestle.
RIGOROUS RESEARCH. Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, the director of the National Institutes of Health, said research would drive policy decisions. He said previous research hasn’t always been focused on the most urgent questions.
“Why are autism rates going up so quickly? “What’s the answer for Type 1 diabetes for kids? ” Dr. Bhattacharya asked.
New research will focus on water and air contaminants, exposure to microplastics and synthetics, vaccine injuries, and the therapeutic harms and benefits of current diagnostic and prescription trends.
NEW VACCINE SCHEDULE. The schedule is in development. The aim is to ensure that the country has the best childhood vaccine timeline.
The new framework will address vaccine injuries, modernize American vaccines with transparent scientific research, remove conflicts of interest and misaligned incentives, and ensure scientific and medical freedom.
ENDING INFLUENCE. Rooting out corporate influence is another major initiative. Conflicts of interest and what is sometimes called the “corporate capture” of a government agency by business interests will be a target.
Health-related federal agencies will be required to review their participation in projects funded by food or pharmaceutical companies.
Other initiatives will require public reporting of research grants and consulting payments to entities that might have a conflict of interest and create a public database of financial relationships and health industry payments to researchers.
IS IT ENOUGH? Critics say the plan doesn’t do enough to address pesticides.
“There isn’t a single recommendation in the report that would meaningfully reduce our exposure to dangerous pesticides,” Sarah Starman of Friends of the Earth said in a statement.
Zen Honeycutt, the founder of Moms Across America, said she was pleased that the report addressed a range of environmental factors, but added, “We are deeply disappointed that the committee allowed the chemical companies to influence the report.”
Honeycutt alleged that the omission of herbicides glyphosate and atrazine from the report was an attempt to appease pesticide producers.
The report says the Environmental Protection Agency will partner with food and agricultural stakeholders to ensure the public has confidence in the “robust review procedures” for pesticides.

A judge in Michigan has dismissed charges against 15 Republicans who were accused of fraud after they planned to certify Donald Trump as the winner of the 2020 election in that state. Ingram County District Court Judge Kristen D. Simmons said there was not sufficient evidence to prove the defendants intended to commit fraud.
