On Wednesday morning, the New York Post, one of America’s largest newspapers, published the shocking story “Smoking-gun email reveals how Hunter Biden introduced Ukrainian businessman to VP dad,” with emails and pictures allegedly obtained from a laptop once owned by Hunter Biden.
Almost immediately, Big Tech — especially Twitter and Facebook — went into overdrive, doing everything possible to prevent the story from being shared on their platforms. Not only did Twitter prevent the link from being shared, including blocking an attempt from House Judiciary Committee Republicans, they even went so far as to lock the account of Kayleigh McEnany, the White House Press Secretary.
Big Tech’s rationale for limiting the distribution of this story was utterly laughable: they claimed it had not yet been “verified.” Not only is it not their responsibility to “verify” stories posted on their platforms, any attempt to do so makes them into publishers, and thus opens them up to lawsuits. Furthermore, when have they ever limited the distribution of unverified (or verifiably false) anti-Trump stories and documents, like the Clinton/DNC-concocted “dossier”? (The answer is never).
For years, Republicans have warned the country about leaving the predatory Big Tech giants unchecked. Now these companies are engaging in election interference on a massive and unprecedented scale. They must be held accountable.
